Interessant sind vor allem die auslaendischen Rezensionen:
Disappointing oversimplification of the role of a military, 28. März

German literature on WW2 has over the years acquired a tone which can
be irritating for some foreign scholars. This particular work is an
excellent collection of rather undisputed facts, while the conclusion
is not nearly as spectacular as the authors themselves seem to think.
It is essentially a work of a moral nature, trying to prove the point
that the Wehrmacht was an enthusiastic accomplice to the Nazi-regime.
The weight of the evidence is provided by the abundant facts proving
that the Wehrmacht circumvented in secret the stipulations of
Versailles and was favourably disposed to the Nazis promising to
re-establish the social status of the soldier in German society.

It is hard to imagine that any army worth its salt would react
differently. In fact, most foreign readers would not expect the
Wehrmacht to have done anything else, since this was its job as a
professional military institution. In this sense, the book relies
heavily on German post-war guilt and holds little value to the foreign
military scholar or historian.

Quite the contrary is the case. I came away from this book with a
strange feeling that modern-day German historians are still
interpreting their own past with the aid of hindsight and seem
increasingly unwilling and unable to understand the functions of a
military. The apparent inability to understand the military mind,
together with the persistent underlying general contempt for soldiers,
suggests that the authorsperception of the past falls broadly within
the same category as that of Reemtsma exhibitors.

Sadly, therefore, the subjective ideological approach and the lacking
insight into the basic functions of any professional military, spoils
an otherwise interesting topic and potentially fascinating read. I
fear that we will dearly miss works from authors like Paul Carrel, if
this new generation of what appear to be ideologically minded, in
essence almost"masochistic", historians is taking German WW2
Literature into this new century.

Der "Historiker" Paul Carrell hieß in Wahrheit Karl Paul Schmidt und war
Pressechef im Außenministerium des Dritten Reichs; Dienstgrad:
SS-Obersturmbannführer. Siehe:
